U. of Rhode Island, CBORD deliver touchless biometrics for dining access

The University of Rhode Island has been using biometric readers on campus for access since 2007, but in part due to the arrival of COVID-19 the time has arrived for URI to implement something new. Leveraging Direct Connect, the latest development in CBORD’s suite of biometric solutions for CS Gold and Odyssey customers, URI was able to install touchless MorphoWave biometric readers from IDEMIA.

Virginia Tech is the latest campus to install touchless biometric readers in its dining halls, deploying MorphoWave hand readers from IDEMIA. Virginia Tech is now the second university in as many weeks to announce its use of the MorphoWave product to enable student access to campus dining, following a release from St. Thomas University last week.

U Maryland uses touchless biometrics for dining hall access

In early 2015, the results of an internal student dining survey indicated a need to change the University of Maryland’s dining program. But rather than simply refresh meal plan offerings, the university decided on a large-scale revamp that, among other improvements, incorporated advanced biometric technology. After consulting with campus card vendor, CBORD the university deployed IDEMIA’s MorphoWave touchless biometric readers for access to all campus dining halls.

Biometrics implemented at Maryland dining halls

The University of Maryland has implemented a new biometric access system at campus dining halls, installing nine of SAFRAN’s MorphoWave biometric terminals. A touchless solution, the MorphoWave biometric terminal reads all four fingerprints of the hand as it is passed through the read area. MorphoWave is the first biometric access solution to capture and match four fingerprints with a single hand movement, and enables access in a completely contactless manner.
