A new policy may soon give University of Cincinnati Police Division officers more authority on campus, according to an independent student newspaper.
If passed, the new policy would allow University of Cincinnati officers to demand anyone on campus who seemed suspicious to present their UC student ID. If they are unable to do so, the officer would be permitted to accompany the person and remove them from the campus grounds.
Senators raised concern that the new policy could enable racial profiling and transgender students, who might not be comfortable sharing their UCID picture, which may not faithfully represent their gender identity.
The new bill, titled “University Rule 40-27-01: Identification Card Policies,” was passed by the Undergraduate Student Government, but must still be passed by UC’s Board of Trustees, whose next meeting is in March.
